Designed by Selgascano & project managed by Second Home, this was the first Second Home expansion outside of its original building in Spitalfields.
Located at the Mercado da Ribeira, a late 19th century landmark by the waterfront in Lisbon, the L-shaped space overlooks a local food market and involved the coordination many local stakeholders.
Featuring a few very large shared desks (topped with over 800 plants) extending down a long, open hall, the workspace is crowned with playfully coloured trusses, refreshing the beautiful existing architectural features dating back to the time of the original market building.
An experiment in desk typologies and overlapping programs, this project includes three types of workspace arrangements, a shared bar, kitchen and cafe seating, four meeting rooms and a lending library. There are also two adaptable event spaces and varied bench seating along two generous corridors, further establishing this constant mix of spaces and use. The result is a space that feels dense and energetic while still maintaining a sense of privacy.
