400 SF OFFICE
ONGOING
Design through Completion
This client wanted to turn their small, but centrally located, office space into a multi-functional hub for their small team of investors. There were multiple goals for this project – to create a unique space that reflected Black Crane’s independent & activist ethos, to present a stylish and serious (but not wasteful) impression upon visiting clients, and of course to make use of every square foot of space available.
Brought on by the client after a previous designer had failed to meet their requirements, we first worked collaboratively with the client team to understand the specific uses and spaces required for their work. We then built the space around an inviting client entry, using a glazed logo wall strategically to guide the visitor into the space. The meeting area doubles as a touchdown point for workers on laptops, and the addition of a lounge seating area (for both the comfortable review of reports, as well as more casual meetings) meant that their work could be performed throughout the space and not only at their desks—an important consideration for a small workplace.
A smaller space meant higher privacy requirements, to which we responded by specifying sound proof partitions (with privacy film for visual separation) and making use of built-in cabinetry to maximize spatial efficiency. To minimize costs, we used common, local construction materials, and retained the existing ceiling structure, existing lighting (with some aesthetic modifications) and mechanical locations.
The result was a very efficient but high performing space with no ‘bad’ seats. It was finished in Black Crane’s brand colours, and designed around the way they work.
